About Meridian Visa Infinite Travel Rewards Card
To begin this Meridian Visa Infinite Travel Rewards Card review in earnest, we’ll check in on the interest rates available. Although the cash advance and balance transfer rates sit at the expected 21.99% mark, the purchase interest rate is just slightly lower than usual at just 19.50%. Given the level of income and the higher credit score required to get this card, interest rates almost shouldn’t be a concern at all, but it’s a nice inclusion all the same.
Reward-wise, this card is fairly simple, but it still works a little differently than competing cards. It will give you 1.5 points per dollar you spend when using Canadian dollars, but a much higher 3 points to the dollar when spending in foreign currency – that’s twice the points! This reward scheme clearly incentivizes spending while travelling, which makes sense given the type of rewards on offer here. Spending $2,000 a month on this card (which shouldn’t be hard to do at the required income level) and an additional amount of just $5,000 a year in foreign currency will leave you with 51,000 points in total in one calendar year. This amounts to a little less than $500 in value. You can spend these points on the travel rewards you would expect to see with a card like this (plane tickets, hotel stays, cruises, car rentals, or even luggage), or switch things up and redeem them for merchandise, gift cards or event tickets. There are no blackout dates or other restrictions on the travel rewards either. The selection here is greater than what you would get from many of Meridian’s competitors, only adding to this card’s value.
While the rewards are great, the benefits are a big part of the appeal of this card, so there’s a lot to say about them in this Meridian Visa Infinite Travel Rewards Card review. Because this is a premium Visa card, it comes with plenty of enticing bonuses and privileges that you’re sure to enjoy. The most universally applicable of them is the Visa Infinite Concierge program, which allows you to delegate many of the smaller administrative tasks in your life to Visa’s representatives (think making reservations, planning outings, and other little hassles like that). When travelling, your favourite perk will likely be the Visa Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection, which gets you guaranteed hotel reservations, possible late checkout privileges, food and drink credits, and more (you must book your stays through Visa’s internal service to use it, however). You also get access to the exclusive and luxurious Dining Series and Wine Country programs.
These aren’t the only benefits you’ll get with this card in your pocket, though. It also comes bundled with an incredible set of insurance, including car rental collision and damage insurance, trip cancellation or interruption insurance, lost baggage insurance, common carrier accident protection, mobile device insurance and even emergency health care coverage. This package of complimentary products ensures that your travels will be as stress-free as possible, allowing you to take your mind off of planning for and managing things that could go wrong and instead focus on truly relaxing. You’ll also be covered by Visa’s fraud monitoring programs and zero-liability policy to protect you from any wrongdoing with your card. Finally, although it’s almost not worth mentioning in this Meridian Visa Infinite Travel Rewards Card review, this card also includes purchase protection and extended warranties to help you make the items you buy last.
Not everything is a positive in this Meridian Visa Infinite Travel Rewards Card review, though. The most glaring drawback is that this is a very exclusive card that costs $99 a year to acquire and won’t take just any applicants. If you don’t make enough money, have good enough credit, or are not comfortable with paying the fairly high annual fee, this card will not be an option for you. It’s a shame that this card can’t be open to everyone, but being picky about who they give it to is part of what allows Meridian to keep this offer so good. There are plenty of other credit cards on the market that serve a wider range of customers, so if you think you might have trouble getting this card, it might be more sensible to aim for one of those instead.
Further, before you apply, you should also consider whether you will be happy with the way you earn rewards. The system this card uses, while great in some ways, is a double-edged sword. You cannot maximize your gains by shopping within Canada – you have to either leave the country or buy things online, often incurring sizeable shipping expenses in the process. This is ideal for people who do spend a lot of time outside of Canada, but for those who don’t, it can be a bit of a problem. Many people who use travel cards prefer to save them up for quite a long time and then pay for one trip in full, rather than spending points gradually on trips over time. This is less common with premium travel cards like this, but there were undoubtedly still be some people with this behaviour pattern looking to try this card. They deserve to know in advance that they may not get everything they want out of it.
The Meridian Visa Infinite Travel Rewards Card is a premium travel card that lets holders make the most of the time and money they spend abroad. It allows you to maximize your earnings rate the more you are away from home, which can be either a blessing or a curse depending on your personal habits. All the same, it’s a commendably generous credit card option, even taking into account its exclusivity. The benefits included with it are its main strength, as we’ve taken care to point out in this Meridian Visa Infinite Travel Rewards Card review.
Meridian Credit Union is one of Canada’s largest credit union institutions, possessing an estimated $11.1 billion in total assets. For all their prominence, they are actually quite new to the credit card game; since their founding in 2005, their primary focus has been on banking, mortgages, and other typical financial services other than credit cards. Their range of Visa cards (of which this is one) has actually only been around since 2017, but they are growing in popularity all the time.
What We Think
We’re happy to end this Meridian Visa Infinite Travel Rewards Card review by saying that we recommend this card, although we do suggest you consider some of the potential negatives that we have listed above before you apply. Not everyone will be able to get it and not everyone will even want it, but if you’re a globetrotting individual and need a card you can count on when out on your adventures, this could easily be the card for you.
